Amman is a huge construction site. I remember days when we would sit in the office ,make paper rockets to throw at each other, have a decent breakfast and a nice cup of coffee then work on a project that everyone in the office is participating in.Now ,each architect is working on a zillion projects,we have problems finding enough draftsmen to finish up the work ,and taking a day off seems like grand treason to the boss.Hundreds of apartments are being built..super deluxe finishes to ayya- kalam- just -be -grateful -to -have- a- roof- on- your -head style apartments. And it all sells..offices ,malls ,activity centers, you name it!!They all sell!!This boom is making everyone wonder..will it last..will all these shops have enough work or will businesses go bankrupt soon?do I buy a house ,will prices go down? But eventually ,my husband and I decided to buy a house..actually not so much decided ,but our landlord nearly kicked us out a few months ago..everyone wants to rent out his house or sell it to iraqis..three more couples we know were kicked out of their rented houses too..every street in amman has at least two or three houses for rent or sale:ammanites please try and notice if this is true!!So at last we find an aprtment we like for one and a half times our budget, triple the distance we had in mind to get to work, and three floors higher than what we are used to.I have always lived in a ground floor with a garden.. Always..I have never had to see peole's trash bags in front of their doors nor smell their cooking when I went home(except for those ten months I lived in Qatar where my neighbors where indian and curry basically nested in my nostrils!!)Now it will be a new experience all together. We bought a fourth floor with a terrace..beautiful view of the Hussein Park and new Mosque in Daboog and the good part is it is not finished yet so I get to do some modifications which is the closest I can get now to every architects dream of designing his own home.My daughter hates it!!!she saw it filled with sand and stones..elevator not working yet and her five year old mind is thinking what the hell?!!!but later on I know she will love it..my not- even- two- yet son will still get to own a dog with the huge terrace space and my husband and I will stop throwing our money away!!hooray!!wish me luck.
