:: Sugar in Amman:Brilliant Jordanian Short Story

In case you've missed last thursday issue of the Jordan Times's Weekender,I recommend you read this short story by the young Jordanian writer Amal El Masri ,for which she won first prize in the 29th annual Toronto Star short story contest this year.I found the description brilliant, the endless details that portray a lovely image of a daughter mother relationship captivating, and the young attitude towards storytelling quite refreshing.

Salam, I really enjoyed this story too! I read it weeks ago when it was published in The Toronto Star - and we tried to get Amal to let us publish it as a feature in JO magazine, but we lost out to the Jordan Times! Oh well!

Ya3ni going to "New english school", eating "la vache qui rit" and not having enough money to buy except "Nice"???

I mean that doesnt really fit.

Dunno, felt it was a bit stereotyped...

you should have insisted ,Hal,I thought it was brilliant.
Ohoud, inno ma ba3raf,I though I see where she comes from, don't you know that mentality in amman, where you could be buying your clothes from Max Mara and going to mo2assaseh for toilet paper?and the school fees?the pig must be paying for them, while she can't ask him for money for her day to day needs!no?

I have this way of measuring the success of an article: give it to impatient readers! I personally happen to be one! I wasn't at all intrigued by the story, I had to skim through it at times! Too many details versus very little action! Anyway, that could just be me!
