:: Jaras TV, For Whom The Bell Tolls

To start with, I have to state that TV is not my thing. I watch news, documentaries, music and the occasional movie or comedy series .Arabic satellite channels are not something I follow, mainly because I don't really care if Haifa is on good terms with Nancy, or if Tamer Hosni really did go to jail, again! These are things you read in one page of a daily newspaper and are not really worth dedicating hours and hours of transmission time for. It seems to me, however, that this is not the case with most people around me.I have noticed, AND I AM NOT TRYING TO SOUND INTELLECTUAL HERE, that people follow these channels religiously. I can't tell you enough how many times I tried telling my colleagues that I don't care who did what to whom on Star Academy, and what so and so was wearing for the prime, but they keep volunteering the information anyways.  And for the last couple of weeks, I have been hearing the word Jaras at work more and more, that I had to ask what the hell is this Jaras, when I was informed that this is one of the newest satellite channels that people are following. Then the phenomena expanded beyond the office walls and people were asking me, did you see this or that on Jaras, and no was my obvious answer.

TILL LAST NIGHT. Girls in the office have said repeatedly :" Jaras will be opening the Nudity file!, Jaras will be opening the Nudity file! Don't forget , it's tomorrow." And as I rolled my eyes in astonishment, I asked what they meant. They told me that this channel will be exposing all the artists that are being overly underdressed on tv, and hearing from people what they think.

I pretty much doubted that this would be a decent show, and did not HONESTLY make the effort to watch it, but my husband was out last night , my kids were sleeping and I was left alone with nothing good to watch on Orbit, I scanned the channels and lo and behold, what do I find other than the infamous Jaras TV and the long anticipated Nudity File!!!

To think that someone is criticizing the amount of nudity on Arabic channels would strike you as a very positive thing, but to watch the show is a totally different experience. In short, the program disgusted me! Not because there were all those pictures of barely clad singers and dancers, but to feel the shameful attempt at gaining audience , through selling honor and principles. It was such a cheap show, they had all the pictures , zoomed them a zillion times and put these red circles on the spots that they were supposed to camouflage, while all they did was attract people's attention. They even went out of their way and created a new title , Nudity Beauty Queen, and were asking people to vote on who should carry the title. The were actually cheesy enough to keep promising people of more nudity pictures of artists, and when asked why they did not show Haifa, the presenter said it in a very proud voice, that people should wait till tomorrow and they will be awarded with the best pictures that they are waiting for. The show was terribly disturbing to me , I hated the fact that people were really impressed by it, that people could be this blind not to see that this program was only exposing nudity for cheap popularity and that hypocrisy has dominated even the TV. Did this show teach our young ones to be protective of their image, and to respect their bodies? No it did not, did it teach young artists that they can be famous without being slutty? no it did not. Did it stop people from ogling the nude  images or did it just open their eyes to new sources for their personal archives? What did this show really do? It attracted millions of arabs to their screen and made sure they will come back for more.. Mabrook Jaras, your bells have tolled on the right ears!

Jaras in Lebanese dialect means scandal. br /> br />They have been issueing a magazine for several years now. It is a tabloid, scandalous magazine that concentrates in scandalize celebretize especially those who they don't like. br /> br />Now they took it a further step to the TV. I have watched the TV channel several times. They didn't seem to invest in any quality show. All what they do is expose people in a very cheap way while claiming to be respectful

Jaras! I did watch this channel a couple of times, mainly to wait for the presenters to tell us -the audience- they are just kidding. Well, obviously they are not kidding and they are taking this extremely seriously. Anyway, back to this nudity thing, I would've been really surprised if you didn't watch the show after all this advertising from the people around you, it is only human to be intrigued, whether to check out positives or negatives, being intrigued is healthy. What isn't healthy is getting addicted to such shows and I am sure people do get addicted, males and females alike. Males for the fun of watching nude girls and females for the fun of hearing it is all plastic surgery (I am sure they discussed this while zooming in on certin body parts). I do have this theory though regarding reality shows such as star academy: sometimes it is usefull to watch. Participants tend to forget there is a camera and act normal, and normal can range from good to bad to ugly depending on the character of the person, and one can watch human behaviour at its best, worst or better still at its normal mode since everyone thinks he/she is normal, normal being extremely relative of course. It is kind of like a psychology class where you can't feel guilty exploiting private mannerisms since participants don't actually mind it. br />Then again, I am just trying to look at the good half of a bursting cup I guess! BTW, they have a Jaras magazine and I am sure the FILE is also openned there.

-That's one more benefit to sending the girls to bed early, Randa..they don't get to watcch such stuff!
-The observer, Thanks for pointing this out I did not make the connection between jaras and scandal, but I see what you mean now..I agree with what you said, you have expressed my thoughts better than me!
-khulud, you make a good point on watching reality tv, it is sort of interesting to see how people react when they are being filmed all the time, but people are just crazy about these shows, that's what annoys me.Thanks for reading, and welcome to my blog!

Yesterday I stayed home after work. I kept on watching TV. Suddenly I reached the Jaras TV, and they were broadcasting the second episode of their nudity file! EWWWWW

They are so stupid! They are really scandalous. I felt angry of the way they are doing it. Claiming to be the defender of the Arabic women honor! That is ridiculous. Their words annoyed me more than any nude picture I have seen!

So many of your colleagues at work watch Star Academy? You mean 20 something young women really watch that show and know details!

Actually it's one of the oldest tricks around, control the media, you control the masses. Infest their minds with stupid shows, like Cojo's reviews, Rossie and Trump Feud and distract them from what's going on. Of course they'll say I'm a conspiracy theory freak. TV channels are garbage these days, I just shiver seeing kids watching Melody Hits, MBC2 and other mind infesting channels. Same works for other channels that got some guy with a beard talking 24/7 about how women should never leave home.

Salam I didn't forget about the electric heating thing, but you have no clue what it has led to (finding mistakes in some Prof book and had to argue with.

You've inspired my next post, and congratulations on not watching much TV.

The observer: it is extremely ok to look for Jaras and watch it! no need to "suddenly" reach the channel :-). Feras, I have to disagree, tv (and internet) are today's books, and watching tv isn't always a waste of time, even though some silly watching is due every now and then to release the mind of its everyday stress. Life's beauty is derived from comparing its most serious to its most silliest...

jaras shouldn't mean 100% scandaleous things but also could have a meaning of warning because it represents shows that talk about things that really exists and that many people don't know or couldn't be knowing about . alos tv and internet are means through wich the person is aware of what is happening allover the world. this kind of tv shows we watch on jaras tv are not only to shock people but to inform them of what the world they're living in is and what it is becoming year after year.
