Who would imagine that Amman is this polluted nowadays?
This picture was taken from the hill on the right of airport road, right next to Everest Spa.
If the sky was not filled with smog you'd see the Le Royal Hotel right in the middle of the picture.

said:Well, this was sort of the purpose of the post, Nas, to say that if Amman, which I consider one of the cleanest cities I know, is this polluted, exhaust fumes, dust and everything else is adding to it..personally I was shocked how grey it was,I've noticed it in this spot and also a couple of days ago coming down from fifth circle towards fourth and looking towards Abdoon.

said:Amman is a city of mountains. In downtown Amman the emissions from car vehicles cause the main source of pollution and the emission contain a high amount of carbon oxides and sulfure dioxide (from Benzine) and those particle usually stick together and form that smog, especially in the early morning hours. I have seen worse in Damascus and cairo but Amman is catching up soon.

On windy days you will not see this, but dust will take over I guess.
Amman is getting more and more polluted and in my last visit (coming from the Pacific northwest) where there is no trace of smog I was surprised

well based on what i remember of 10th grade physics...
it's a mixture of things...
one: you are looking down on a section of amman that is crowded with buildings, hence the light is more scattered, thus leaving the horizon a more grayish color than the ordinary blue.
two: greater dust particles, which Amman is known for, also lead to scattered light and lighter hues.
three: exhaust fumes also play a role.
but in terms of pollution leading to smog, we are probably one of the cleaner cities in that category. mainly because we produce fairly little and most factories that emit smog are not inside the city.
